Sustainability

The University of Texas at Austin aims to create a disciplined culture of excellence that generates intellectual excitement, transforms lives and develops leaders. The Commission of 125 defines this culture as "excellence in all university endeavors, characterized by strong leadership and an engaged intellectual community, combined with individual and institutional accountability."

Waller Creek CleanupThis excellence includes advancing environmental stewardship and sustainability on our campus, in our academic and research programs, and in our public service and outreach activities.

The working definition of sustainability refers to "societal efforts that meet the needs of present users without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability presumes that the planet's resources are finite, and should be used conservatively, wisely and equitably. Decisions and investments aimed to  promote sustainability will simultaneously advance economic vitality, ecological integrity and social welfare."

Sustainability Portal

The Sustainability portal is dedicated to environmental sustainability at The University of Texas at Austin. Many academic units, administrative offices, student and staff organizations, and centers and institutes have taken leadership roles in sustainability on the campus. The portal pulls together and presents existing resources to smooth the way for information sharing and collaboration.

Sustainability Directory

The Sustainability directory is an online resource that organizes and communicates the scope of the university's academic offerings with regard to sustainability. Focused solely on education and research, the directory is organized into six main topical areas that reflect both the university's strengths and the interdisciplinary nature of sustainability. Visitors can find exactly what they are looking for in the directory by subtopic and keyword search, and community members -- both within and outside of the university -- can connect to important education and research happening on campus.
