Publishing

When a research project culminates in a paper, students may want to consider submitting it to a journal for publication. There are a number of undergraduate research journals to consider, both inside and outside the university.

Students who are completing an independent research project should work with their faculty mentor on their submission; faculty mentors can provide valuable feedback and advice on how to proceed at all stages. Students who have been assisting with a faculty research project must receive the approval of their faculty supervisor before making any plans to submit a paper. Once approved, students should work with their faculty supervisor on all details of their submission.

Depending on the quality and significance of the project, your faculty mentor or supervisor may recommend that the paper be submitted to a professional journal specific to the discipline.

Journals and Publications

UT Publications

The Student Journal of Latin American Studies was established to increase student involvement in Latin American research topics and further connect the work of graduate and undergraduate students across the nation. The journal provides a medium through which students from any higher-education institution and any discipline may publish original research on topics related to Latin America.

Sociological Insight is a fully refereed national undergraduate research journal aimed at promoting undergraduate research in the social sciences. Insight provides an opportunity for undergraduates all over the U.S. and abroad to publish their best academic work, and to reap the benefits of subjecting their research to a rigorous review process.

The Undergraduate Research Journal is a student-edited, multi-disciplinary journal of undergraduate research at The University of Texas at Austin. Both students who are pursuing their own research projects and those who are assisting with faculty research are welcome to submit their work.

External Publications

The Dualist is a national undergraduate philosophy journal published by Stanford University undergraduates. Its purpose is to offer students an opportunity to participate in a normally inaccessible part of academic life -- the production and publication of papers for general philosophical readership. Established in 1993, The Dualist has since become the most renowned and prestigious undergraduate philosophy journal in the U.S., featuring thoughtful articles authored by undergraduates around the world.

The Pittsburgh Undergraduate Review's (PUR) purpose is to advance innovative undergraduate scholarship. The PUR aims to bring research to the forefront of undergraduate awareness. By presenting provocative ideas, the PUR catalyzes further intellectual innovations and pursuits, thereby energizing the academic community. To accomplish these goals, the PUR showcases the best available undergraduate research. This is achieved by publishing indiscriminately with regards to location and discipline; the PUR is a multidisciplinary journal that accepts papers from around the world.

The Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research is an international, fully reviewed, quarterly journal dedicated to the publication of undergraduate student research. The twofold purpose of the journal is to foster and reward the scholarly efforts of undergraduate psychology students as well as to provide them with a valuable learning experience. The articles published in this journal represent primarily the work of the undergraduate student(s). Faculty mentors, who deserve recognition, are also acknowledged in the publication.

The Journal of Young Investigators (JYI, Inc.) is an exciting, student-led initiative to broaden the scope of the undergraduate scientific experience. JYI provides opportunities for students to participate in the scientific review and publication processes, primarily through the operation of its peer-reviewed journal for undergraduates. Incorporated as a non-profit, entirely student-run corporation, JYI's staff members currently represent over 30 different academic institutions.
