Welcome from the Vice Provost
Welcome to the International Office and to The University of Texas at Austin, where everyday our global community of students and scholars prove What Starts Here Changes the World.
Top Study Abroad Program
We are proud to provide opportunities for our students to gain international experience through our study abroad programs.
According to the recent "Open Doors" report, published by the Institute of International Education, The University of Texas at Austin is among the top five U.S. universities in sending students abroad, providing academic credit for 2,342 students in 2007-08 who completed educational programs throughout the world. We offer programs in every part of the world and the top five destinations for students were the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, China and France.
The colleges and programs sending the most students abroad are Liberal Arts, Business, Communication, the Graduate School and Engineering. UT programs are as diverse as the colleges and schools that support them, providing opportunities for students to engage with their host culture through study, research, field work, and service learning.
Welcoming the World's Scholars
The University of Texas at Austin joins Columbia University, Harvard University, New York University and the University of Southern California in the Top 10 for international student enrollment.
During 2008-09, 5,703 international students enrolled in the University, with many focusing on science and engineering programs. The top five home countries are South Korea, India, China, Mexico and Taiwan.
We are proud to have an excellent English as a Second Language program that serves approximately 1,000 students each year, including international teaching assistants and assistant instructors. Our international students and scholars enrich the lives of all of us at the University and we are privileged they have chosen our campus as their new home.
The most popular graduate degree programs for international students are civil engineering, computer sciences, electrical and computer engineering, physics and petroleum engineering.
Undergraduates' top degree preferences are in engineering and business programs, focusing on electrical engineering, economics, business administration, petroleum engineering and computer science.
The Future
Although we have a rich history of internationalization, we still have many opportunities to grow. The International Office has a unique staff with exceptional knowledge of language and culture, and we aspire to be a leader on campus for global awareness by facilitating international opportunities for faculty and students.
We are dedicated to providing international opportunities to all of our students and we understand this means developing affordable programs and increasing financial aid. We continue to attract talent from all over the world and to expand our relationships to bring students and scholars from under-represented countries. And, we remain committed to the safety and security of our students and faculty and staff members wherever they may be studying or working in the world.
As Texas and the United States move into the 21st century, the University of Texas embraces the opportunities to expand our global perspective. With its international relationships, intellectual capital and thought-leaders, we serve as a gateway for the state and nation to explore the world’s cultures, markets and ideas.
Again, welcome to The University of Texas at Austin where What Starts Here Changes the World.
