How Do I Create a Good, Strong Password?

A strong password is one of the most important tools for protecting your personal information. If you learn to create strong password for your essential accounts, like your email, UT Direct, and your computer, you are less likely to have your accounts compromised. It can be challenging to create a good password that's easy to remember yet hard to crack, but there are a few tips you can follow to come up with a strong password:

  • Use both upper- and lower-case letters

  • Use numbers and punctuation marks - even in the middle of your password

  • Use special characters, such as ! @ # $ % & * ( ) - + = , < > : ; " ' .

  • Make your password between 8 and 20 characters long

  • Use a phrase or a song title. For example, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" becomes "Sw0tR8nBO" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" becomes "sMll10nspT."
