An Email I Sent Was Returned With [UTEXAS: SPAM DETECTED] in the Subject Line
To help identify and respond to compromised email accounts, Information Technology Services (ITS) automatically scans outbound email from Austin Exchange Messaging Service (AEMS) and University Mailbox Service (UMBS) (including Webmail) for spam.
Your message may be detected as spam by the ITS email filters if it meets one or more of the following criteria:
The message's "From" or "Reply-to" headers are set to a non-utexas.edu email address. If you are using Webmail and this is the case, you can manage your Webmail identity to fix this problem.
The message contains explicit language consistent with spam as determined by accepted industry standards.
The message contains links to questionable Web sites or consists primarily of links with little additional text.
The message quotes other spam messages.
Note: The ITS email filters will not affect your ability to report spam or phishing schemes to "abuse@domain", "postmaster@domain", or "security@domain" email addresses.
Due to the dynamic and evolving nature of spam, the ITS spam filters are constantly adapting and changing. The above list represents the most common reasons that outbound messages are blocked as spam, however, many other factors are considered and will be taken into account as trends change. ITS may expand this filtering if needed.
If one of your outbound emails looks like spam to the ITS email filters, it will be blocked automatically and you will receive the following email notification:
Subject: [UTEXAS: SPAM DETECTED] OriginalSubjectHere
THIS IS AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN SPAM FILTER.

The attached message is being returned because it looks like spam to the ITS email filters.
If you did not send this message, contact the ITS Help Desk at 512-475-9400 immediately as your email account may be compromised.
If you did send this message and it is not spam, please note that certain characteristics can make a legitimate message look like spam.
