MySQL
Overview
MySQL is an open source relational database management system (RDBMS). It is commonly used for database services for other open source applications, such as Drupal and Wordpress.
ITS provides two methods to use MySQL for customer applications. In the first method, ITS fully manages the entire MySQL infrastructure so the customer does not have to.
In the second method, the customers manage the infrastructure themselves and purchase access to the university’s campus-wide MySQL Enterprise Platinum support contract.
Features
- Fully Managed
In the fully managed infrastructure, ITS owns, manages, and supports the MySQL hardware and software resources.
Fully managed MySQL is recommended for departments, colleges, or other groups that require MySQL service but who do not have the appropriate hardware, software, or staff resources to run it themselves. It is also recommended for those who will be using Category I data in their databases. - Self-Managed with Commercial Support
In the self-managed infrastructure with commercial support, the customer purchases access to the campus-wide MySQL Enterprise Platinum support agreement. This allows the customer to interact directly with the MySQL support staff at MySQL AB for all support requests.
The Self-Managed MySQL with Commercial Support is recommended for departments that have existing MySQL services requiring commercial support, features of MySQL Enterprise, or have existing staff that focus on MySQL administration.
Cost
Fully Managed
The Fully Managed MySQL database service is available at no cost for departments for up to six named databases. Additional named databases can be purchased in quantities of six for an additional $150 per year. Additional storage space is $7 per gigabyte per year. The Fully Managed version can be ordered through the Request MySQL Database Services form.
Self-Managed with Commerical Support
The commercial support contract has two cost structures: $700 per server assessed annually, or $2500 per department assessed annually covering an unlimited number of department-owned MySQL servers. The Self-Managed version can be ordered through TXShop.
