Study Abroad Office Opportunities

International Education Fee Scholarships

The Study Abroad Office administers these fellowships. The awards are funded by a $3 fee assessed each student each semester and are used to support students who wish to do study abroad or research projects.

Application Deadline:
Applications are due in October for programs beginning spring semester, and March for summer and fall semester programs.

Stipend:
Basic fellowships range from $300 for summer and $500 for semester/academic year. Comprehensive Awards are determined according to need and merit.

National Security Education Program (NSEP)

Awards based on merit of student and program are made for different lengths of time depending on student classification status. Funded by the U.S. government they are intended to increase knowledge of less commonly taught languages and cultures. A service agreement of equal time in the federal government is required.

Eligibility:
U. S. citizenship. Grants available for all countries outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Undergraduates and graduate students plan their own program of study/research for which they must be able to receive credit at their home institutions. Applicants are encouraged to attend an information session. Call the Study Abroad Office for schedule information.

Usually the end of January

Stipend:
Covers tuition, living expenses, health insurance and round-trip transportation up to $8,000 per semester for undergraduates, $10,000 for graduate students

Fulbright (IIE) and Related Grants for Graduate Study and Research Abroad

Awards are usually made for one year of study and research abroad. U.S. government funds administered by the Institute of International Education in New York.

Eligibility:
U.S. citizen, must have B.A. or B.S. by the time of award. Graduating seniors and graduate students plan their own program of study/research. Grants available for almost all countries. Usually round-trip transportation, language or orientation courses, tuition, book and research allowances and supplemental health and accident insurance for one year based on the living costs in the host country.

German Grants

German Grants administered by the Study Abroad Office are the DAAD, FGAC, Freiburg and Alexander von Humboldt Chancellor's fellowships. These funding opportunities are administered on campus via one application but vary in eligibility requirements. The selection committee determines who the candidates will be for the different awards.

DAAD

German Academic Exchange Service Annual Grants for 10 months of research or study in all disciplines at any German institution. U.T. students are nominated as candidates with final awards determined by DAAD.

Eligibility:
U. S. Citizenship
Foreign nationals attending U.T. more than one year
U.T. graduating seniors and graduate students
Invitation from German academic institution
German language proficiency in arts, humanities, and social sciences

Stipend:
1,250-1,700 DM/month, additional allowance for married recipients excess baggage charges, start-up costs and books, round-trip airfare and health and accident insurance.

FGAC (Federation of German-American Clubs)

Scholarship for ten months of study at one of a selected group of German universities.

Eligibility:
U.T. undergraduate and graduate students who are not married. German language proficiency.

Stipend:
A stipend of 900 DM month, room and board during orientation and meetings.

University of Freiburg Exchange

Eligibility:
Graduating seniors and graduate students. German language proficiency.

Stipend:
A stipend of 7,950 DM over a ten month period.

Alexander von Humboldt Chancellor's Scholarship

Scholarship for study or research in any German institution. Selection allows UT candidate to compete nationally for one of ten awards.

Eligibility:
Graduating seniors and graduate students in social sciences, humanities, law, economics, business or communication. Clearly defined plans for study or research.

Stipend:
Twelve or more months of funding 3,000 DM-5,500 DM/month, language training if needed prior to study, four-week orientation seminar, round-trip transportation, additional allowance for married fellows, health and accident insurance and a study tour.
