ROTC Commissioning Ceremony

May 18, 2007

I am honored to welcome you to this ceremony for the 60 men and women who will be commissioned today. I invite the families and friends of our cadets to make yourselves at home on our campus, and let me know if there is anything I can do for you during your visit.

My own service in the Navy in the late 1960s was a transformative experience. I remember those early days and the sense of anticipation that comes with embarking on the grand learning experience of military service. The Navy gave me an opportunity to see the world--but more importantly, it put me in a position of responsibility where others depended on me and on my decisions. There is no better leadership training than leading others in a situation where the stakes are high--and people depend on you.

I also congratulate you for your willingness to serve, especially today, when your service may send you to some of the world's most troubled areas.

John Paul Jones, father of the American Navy, once said, "I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way."

It is my hope that your military service does not place you in harm's way. But if so, your country wants you to have the latter day equivalent of a fast ship. That is, the best education, training, equipment, and technology that we have to offer.

In the coming weeks, you will be reporting to military bases around the nation, followed by assignments around the world.

Take with you the spirit of Texas and the values we treasure at this University--the quest for learning, truth, and discovery. Lead with integrity, and use your gifts to make the world a better and safer place.

ROTC Class of 2007--I salute you and wish you every success in your endeavors.

Good luck and Godspeed!
