To be successful in the “money game” you must:

Preliminary Financial Planning:

The application and pre departure process will require a certain amount of "cash in hand". This is especially important, as in many cases loans, scholarships and grants will not be distribute to the student until the first class day at UT each semester and many expenses must be covered before that time.

Total before getting on the plane:  $2000+
  • Application Fee (ranges from $25 - $50) and/or
  • Program Deposit (ranges from $350 - $500)
  • Airfare (if not included in program fee)
  • Pocket money for initial travel to the host country ($100 - $200)
  • Passport ($90)
  • Visa (ranges $50 - $300)

The Funding Reality

  • Approximately 50% of students who study abroad on official UT Austin study abroad programs use some type of aid to fund their overseas program.
  • In most cases, funding will not come from one source, but rather from various diverse sources (scholarships, loans, savings, parents, community, etc.).
  • As the number of students studying abroad increases the scholarship awards become more competitive. In general, 15-40% of applicants are funded.
